Prepping for a Newborn Shoot

For Baby + Siblings:

  • 1-2 comfy outfits for baby (not including naked/just diaper)
  • Swaddles + blankets to be featured in your shoot
  • Clean hands/nails for close up shots


For mom + dad:

  • Comfy outfit that makes mama feel confident/nursing-friendly if necessary (overalls, loose dress, linen sets, loose barrel pants, etc)
  • Outfits you can sit on bed or couch comfortably in
  • Clean hands/nails for close up shots

Pick colors that match YOU - what sounds most like you?

  • Minimal white + tan/earth tones
  • A few eclectic patterns + complimentary pops of color
  • Canadian tuxedos + all denim
  • I love checkerboard, yellow, and blue. But you might like minimal + flowy creams. Pick the look that will make you feel confident

notes for a smooth shoot


  • Aim to feed baby around 30 minutes before your shoot time, so he or she is content (as much as possible) during shoot.


  • Allow time for mama to get ready in the morning first, so you don’t feel rushed or stressed when feeding baby.


  • Don’t worry about baby acne or peeling skin - it happens. I can retouch this.


  • Ensure toddlers have as normal of their routine as possible, so they don’t feel stressed. I’d recommend keeping rewards (treats, tv time, etc until after they are done shooting to avoid tantrums during shoot times). I capture toddler/sibling/family shots first, so the little ones can be done as soon as possible.


  • Prepare activities or scenes you’d like to be documented. What does your child or family love doing right now? Ex: making smoothies together, blowing bubbles, picking lemons off your tree, jumping on the bed, playing with hot wheels, etc...


  • Only clean the areas of your home that will be on camera (please don’t worry about the mess. I have 3 kids. I get it…) My usual spots are bed, couch, nursery, and front porch or yard. But you can choose the spots you love, of course.


  • If you have someone to help with older kids like a grandparent or friend, that can help make your shoot go smoother, as well. I’m always happy to capture a few grandparent shots, as well.


  • As much as possible, take care of your needs prior to the shoot, so you’re a calm + safe space for your baby. The more at ease you are, the more at ease your baby will likely be, too.
